What to pack on a trip to Singapore?

Everyone has their own way of packing for a trip, but in my opinion, packing light is the way to go!

Singapore’s efficient transport system and endless shopping options mean you can easily pick up anything you forget.

If you’re travelling on a budget, pack lightweight, quick-dry clothing so you can wash and re-wear your outfits instead of overpacking or spending on laundry services.

A compact umbrella is also a great addition for those unexpected showers—these little things can help you save space and money during your trip!

Of course, beyond the essentials like your passport, visa, and travel insurance, there are a few must-pack items to make your trip smoother.

Read on for my top recommendations on what to pack for a trip to Singapore!

Tissue papers/wet wipes

Have you heard of chope culture in Singapore?

It’s the local habit of reserving seats at hawker centres by placing a packet of tissue paper on a table. No need for a person to sit there—if you see tissues, that table is taken!

So, if you’re grabbing food at a busy hawker centre, don’t forget to chope your seat with a packet of tissues before lining up.

That said, not everyone understands this unique practice.

A friend of mine once left a packet of tissues to reserve a seat, only to return and find a group of tourists using it to wipe the table clean! They thought someone had thoughtfully left it for them!

If you want to be extra sure, consider leaving a water bottle or an umbrella along with the tissues—many Singaporeans do this nowadays too!

Beyond choping seats, tissues and wet wipes are a must-have in Singapore. Many hawker centres don’t provide napkins, so having your own is a lifesaver after a delicious meal.

Plus, with the heat and humidity, wet wipes come in handy to freshen up throughout the day.

Portable phone charger

Singapore is becoming a cashless society, and you’ll rely on your phone for navigation, transport apps, mobile payments, and, of course, snapping amazing photos. The last thing you want is a dead battery while exploring!

Some MRT stations (like Bugis, City Hall, Orchard, Tanjong Pagar and Outram) offer charging points, but you’d have to wait around for your phone to charge.

There are portable charger rental stations across the city, but they can be tricky to find, and you’ll need to return them to the same spot.

So save yourself the hassle—bring your own power bank!

Travel adapter

Singapore uses Type G three-pronged plug and socket

Singapore uses the Type G three-pronged plug and socket, just like the UK. If your devices have a different plug type, remember to bring a universal travel adapter. The voltage here is 230V, 50Hz, so double-check if your electronics need a converter before you pack!

Mosquito repellent

While Singapore has strict mosquito control, some areas—like nature parks, reservoirs, and the Night Safari—still have mosquitoes.

Even locals carry repellent when heading outdoors, so don’t take any chances! A DEET-based spray or mosquito patches will help keep bites away.

Sunscreen

With Singapore’s year-round tropical sun, UV rays are no joke!

Even on cloudy days, the UV index can be high, so applying sunscreen is a must. Make sure to reapply throughout the day, especially if you’ll be outdoors for long hours.

Cap

A lightweight cap or wide-brimmed hat will shield you from the sun while you explore.

Whether you’re walking around Gardens by the Bay, visiting Sentosa, or shopping at Orchard Road, a cap helps keep you cool and protects your face from harsh UV rays.

Umbrella

A small, foldable umbrella is an absolute lifesaver in Singapore.

It protects you from the scorching sun and is a must during monsoon seasons (December to March, June to September) when sudden downpours are common.

Locals use umbrellas for both rain and shade, so it’s worth keeping one in your bag.

Comfortable walking shoes and/or slippers

Singapore is a super walkable city, and you’ll likely be on your feet a lot. I’d say you bring your most comfortable walking shoes—sneakers or cushioned sandals work best.

It is also practical to bring easy slip-on sandals or slippers if you plan to visit temples and mosques.

You are required to remove your shoes before entering these religious sites, so having easy slip-on sandals or slippers makes it quicker to step in and out

Light clothing

Singapore’s weather is hot and humid year-round, so pack lightweight, breathable clothing like cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking fabrics.

If you’re visiting during monsoon season, a light rain jacket will keep you dry.

Another important thing to keep in mind when visiting temples and mosques is the need to dress modestly out of respect for local customs.

Most religious sites would require you to cover your shoulders and knees. Some may offer loaner sarongs, but it’s best to bring your own scarf or shawl just in case.

It’s a good idea to check the dress code in advance to avoid any surprises and ensure you don’t have to turn back.

Swimwear

Planning to visit Sentosa’s beaches or take a dip in your hotel pool? Pack your swimsuit! Swimwear in Singapore can be pricey, so bringing your own saves you from overpaying.

Carabiner

A carabiner might not seem like a must-have, but trust me—it’s a game changer!

I never travel without a carabiner, it’s an absolute essential!

You can hook shopping bags onto your bag to free up your hands, attach your water bottle to your bag so it’s easily accessible, and even secure small items like caps or snacks instead of carrying them.

Medication

Whenever I travel, I always carry a basic medication pouch—it’s so much easier than scrambling to find a pharmacy in a foreign country.

You never know if they’ll have the exact medication you’re used to, or if finding a pharmacy will be convenient when you need it.

If you take prescription medication, note that some require prior approval before being brought into Singapore. You can check the latest requirements and apply through Singapore ICA to avoid any issues at customs.

Conclusion

Packing for Singapore doesn’t have to be overwhelming—as long as you bring the right essentials, you’ll be set for a smooth and enjoyable trip!

From lightweight clothing and comfortable shoes to a portable phone charger and travel adapter, every item on this list will help you stay comfortable, prepared, and ready to explore.

At the end of the day, Singapore is a modern and well-equipped city, so don’t stress too much—anything you forget can likely be bought here.

Pack smart, travel light, and most importantly, have an amazing time!
